On this front, there are detailed changes in virtually every area of the software improved menu layouts, greater control over the layout, size and arrangements of sub‑windows, and workspace presets that can be configured for different workflows/tasks. However, more obvious to existing HALion users will be a refresh of many parts of the UI. So, what’s new in the full version? Well, in the background, Steinberg have added support for Apple Silicon and dongle‑free licensing. As we will see in a moment, that’s an impressive collection so, if your level of sound design only goes as far as tweaking existing presets (which HALion Sonic most certainly lets you do), and you don’t want to dig deeper into the sound‑design process, this might be an attractive option. Second, the new HALion Sonic 7 Collection (priced at £214 $249.99) bundles the free player with all of the current instruments supplied with the full version of HALion 7. First, HALion Sonic 7 itself is available as a free‑to‑download product. Additionally, alongside the full, flagship product, they have introduced two new HALion Sonic options. The core purpose remains the same but there are plenty of new and revised features within the latest release. Steinberg have now launched HALion 7, some six years after its predecessor. With a good selection of sound expansion packs available, either HALion or HALion Sonic can provide a front‑end to an expansive sonic palette that crosses a wide range of musical genres. These tools are suitable for the keen DIY sound designer to build their own unique sounds but, via the Macro and Library Creator options, also allow developers to produce unique front‑end designs and commercial library expansion packs for the HALion or HALion Sonic platforms (HALion’s more compact offspring that provides ‘player only’ functions but with plenty of options for editing preset sounds). As well as playback and performance features, HALion also provides a substantial set of tools for creating your own instruments using samples, synthesis or a combination of both. It can run as a stand‑alone instrument, or in any DAW as a plug‑in (VST3, AAX and AU formats are supported). ![]() ![]() ![]() HALion is the flagship item on this list. Clusters were those overlapping areas with at least 5 outlets for both premise types. After comparing the Durham context to Atlanta, we defined clusters on the basis of an overlapping 0.15-mile radius (ie, spatial buffer) around outlets active on January 1, 2017. A spatial outlet cluster was defined similarly to that in the Zhang study (9) but with parameters modified for a smaller city context. Distance-to-nearest-outlet calculations reached outside of county boundaries to maintain accuracy for residents living near borders (eg, when a Durham resident’s nearest outlet was in a neighboring county). Permits were filtered to 38 types of alcohol outlets that sell to individuals, excluding catering, shipping, and wholesalers.ĭistances between populations and outlets were calculated by Euclidean (ie, straight line) methods, because of the ease of communication and because it is unclear whether relationships of alcohol outlets and populations operate by driving along roads in a smaller, walkable city. We derived alcohol outlet locations in Durham from the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control license database for 2007 through 2017, representing over 165,000 outlet licenses of more than 60 permit types. Hereafter, Durham refers to the county, except when stated otherwise. ![]() Durham is the name of both a North Carolina county and the largest city within that county. We report on-premises (eg, sit-down restaurant) and off-premises (eg, liquor store or gas station) results separately because off-premises settings carry unique and increased population health harms (10). We expanded on that study by using alcohol outlet density metrics (spatial access index, minimum distance) to describe racial and ethnic disparities in the alcohol outlet environment in the city of Durham, North Carolina. Using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publication, Guide for Measuring Alcohol Outlet Density (8), Zhang et al identified outlet clusters in Atlanta, Georgia, and found that reducing outlet density was associated with reductions in violent incidents (9). After conversations with community partners, we contextualized these metrics by using maps to emphasize spatial associations of historic racial disenfranchisement and present-day alcohol outlet clusters. Given the community context and the role of racism as a fundamental cause of health disparities (7), we supplemented the community-led analysis of racial and ethnic disparities with measures of spatial access and distance to the nearest alcohol outlet. Denser alcohol environments are associated with multiple chronic disease pathways (3), neighborhood-level social effects (4), and increased rates of alcohol-related morbidities and mortalities, such as from motor vehicle crashes, pedestrian injuries, and various types of violence (5).Ĭommunity partners in Durham County, North Carolina, explored the alcohol and tobacco exposure environment during community-wide conversations about gentrification and neighborhood change (6), laying the groundwork for our study. Policies limiting high densities of alcohol outlets (places where alcohol can be sold or consumed) can curb excessive alcohol consumption (2). Įxcessive alcohol consumption is responsible for more than 95,000 deaths in the US each year (1). Both transforms are done with fixed-point arithmetic to avoid rounding errors. Mispredicted data and non-predicted blocks are compressed in a 4×4 pixel sub-block with a discrete cosine transform or a Walsh–Hadamard transform. There are four basic modes of block prediction: horizontal, vertical, DC (one color), and TrueMotion. Each block is predicted on the values from the three blocks above it and from one block to the left of it (block decoding is done in raster-scan order: left to right and top to bottom). The side length of WebP images is limited to 16 384 pixels. Without further content, the mandatory RIFF container has an overhead of only twenty bytes, though it can also hold additional metadata. As such, it is a block-based transformation scheme with eight bits of color depth and a luminance–chrominance model with chroma subsampling by a ratio of 1:2 ( YCbCr 4:2:0). WebP's lossy compression algorithm is based on the intra-frame coding of the VP8 video format and the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) as a container format. Īs of November 2021, web browsers that support WebP had 96% market share. The supporting libwebp library reached version 1.0 in April 2018. In September 2020, WebP support was added in Safari version 14. In July 2016, Apple added WebP support to early beta versions of macOS Sierra and iOS 10, but support was later removed in the GM seed versions of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra released in September 2016. According to Google's measurements in November 2011, a conversion from PNG to WebP resulted in a 45% reduction in file size when starting with PNGs found on the web, and a 28% reduction compared to PNGs that are recompressed with pngcrush and PNGOUT. On 18 November 2011, Google announced a new lossless compression mode, and support for transparency ( alpha channel) in both lossless and lossy modes support was enabled by default in libwebp 0.2.0 (16 August 2012). Older animated GIF files can be converted to animated WebP. Tiling support was never finalized and was removed from the spec again. On 3 October 2011, Google added an "Extended File Format" allowing WebP support for animation, ICC profile, XMP and Exif metadata, and tiling (compositing very large images from maximum 16384×16384 tiles). WebP-related software is released under a BSD free software license. As a derivative of the VP8 video format, it is a sister project to the WebM multimedia container format. It was based on technology which Google had acquired with the purchase of On2 Technologies. WebP was first announced by Google on 30 September in 2010 as a new open format for lossy compressed true-color graphics on the web, producing files that were smaller than JPEG files for comparable image quality. Google announced the WebP format in September 2010, and released the first stable version of its supporting library in April 2018. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as animation and alpha transparency.
